Passive Income and Microstock Earnings for May 2011

Another average month. It was probably actually pretty good considering some of the decent earning agencies like Fotolia and Vectorstock that I cut ties with this year. It will take time to make up for eliminating them, but I think it was the right decision for me. That said, I have been seeing some growth from Graphic Leftovers. I think that is a positive sign because my goal was to heavily support the agencies that I thought were fair to the artists and eliminate the ones that weren’t. Seeing them grow is a positive sign that with small sacrifices it may be possible to reshape the micro market into something more palatable and maybe even more profitable.

Speaking of unprofitable, iStock continued its slide down. They still sit at the number 2 earning spot behind Shutterstock but only accounted for 16% of my total passive income. It’s kind of shocking considering they used to be a steady 30-40%. It’s a shame that an agency that was poised to rule the market took a nosedive off a cliff.

Finally, my own site, myStockVectors.com, had a steady stream of traffic this month. It wasn’t my biggest earning month, but I had the highest number of unique customers. Hopefully, this means that my traffic is increasing. I’m still very excited and enthusiastic about having my own site. It’s been hard work, but worth it.

Adobe Illustrator Tutorials on myStockVectors.com

Bird Tutorial

I’ve written a couple tutorials on my stock art site, myStockVectors.com. They both involve the cartoon bird above. One is a basic Illustrator technique. You can check it out here. The other involves using colors and gradients in Illustrator. Check it out here. Enjoy!

Cartoon Frog with Crown

I figured I needed to update my website and at least get rid of the Hallowwen witch before next Halloween. Anyway, I bring you a frog with a crown. Enjoy looking at him for the next several months. I’m kidding. I’ll try to update the images more often.

Passive Income and Microstock Earnings for April 2011

I didn’t publish microstock numbers earlier this month. Since I’ve been working on my own site, myStockVectors.com, I’ve been less interested in my numbers at the other sites. That said, I guess I should say something about April.

My numbers in April were kind of low. At around $2100, it was my worst month of the year so far. Shutterstock again led the pack, but I can’t say the numbers were impressive there. I closed my account at a few more sites as well. I decided to close up shop at Vectorstock. I just thought the prices were too low and it was undercutting the market. They were a solid seller though. The other agency I cut ties with was Crestock. I don’t have much positive to say about them, and I didn’t see a whole lot of a change with the new management.

In my personal stock site news, I launched Design Files. It’s an idea I was thinking about when I opened my site, but just now got around to building. It’s basically multiple files and elements together with a font for everything you need for a design project. They are priced at a reasonable price that is cheaper than buying the elements individually. Hopefully, it adds a new and successful price point for the site.

That’s about it. I have a few new sites Cutcaster, Drawshop and Yay, but sales have been slow there so far.

Not too much news happening this month. I joined a few new sites, but haven’t got much up at any of them yet. So, I didn’t list them. I figured I should probably try to replace Fotolia’s income. We’ll see.

Passive Income and Microstock Earnings for January 2011

This was definitely a strange beginning to the year. My overall total was decent, but how I got there was a little different. Most of my normal high earners were down, but all my up-and-coming agencies had record months. Congrats to Canstock for kicking down the door and saying I’m here.

I made the decision to delete my portfolio at Fotolia. After 3 years in a row of lowering royalty rates, it just didn’t seem to be a place I wanted to be partnered with anymore. I’m not too pleased with the recent trend of agencies cutting into the royalty rates of contributors. Hopefully, they will figure out that it isn’t in their best interest to shaft their suppliers. Anyway… feel free to post a link to your results in the comments.

New Year’s Resolutions for 2011

Happy 2011! It’s a new year, so it is time for new resolutions. I posted my 2010 resolutions here. I thought I’d review how I did on those goals and make new ones for 2011. Here’s how 2010′s goals went:

Earn $3000 in a month with my stock art/passive income.
I was hoping to continue my amazing growth from 2009 into 2010, but it didn’t happen. Things slowed down for me in 2010, and I fell short of this goal. My best month was around $2900, so I wasn’t really that far off. Also, I didn’t count all the money I got from Veer’s “Dash for Cash” which would have pushed me well over this goal. I guess this one will go back on the list for 2011. Failed (Barely)!

Get some Flash files online for sale.
I was looking to expand my stock offerings with Flash files this year. Unfortunately with iStock’s announcement about royalty changes, I decided to shelve this goal. There aren’t that many places to sell Flash, so I didn’t see the point in working on this. Failed (Abandoned)!

Equal or exceed my income from before I quit my 9 to 5 job.
This was probably my most important goal. It was on my 2008, 2009 and 2010 resolutions list, but no longer. I accomplished it, so I can finally check it off my list. Success!

One out of three isn’t too good, so I should probably create some easier goals. Or, I need to work harder. Here are my resolutions for 2011:

Earn $3000 in a month with my stock art/passive income.

Make $500 in a month at myStockVectors.com.

Increase my freelance earnings by 15%.

Learn and submit 3D illustration files.

Get to 4000 stock art files.

OK, so that is a lot. I guess I just have more goals to fail (I mean accomplish) in 2011.
